You’ve probably seen the headlines. Wegovy is being talked about as a game-changer in the world of weight loss. But what exactly is it? Who is it for? And what should you know before considering it?
Here are Andy’s five key things to know about Wegovy:
Wegovy isn’t something you can grab off the shelf. It’s a prescription-only medicine, and currently not funded in New Zealand.
To be eligible, you’ll need to see your doctor. The prescribing criteria in NZ are:
A BMI over 30, or
A BMI over 27 if you have other health conditions, such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol.
So, while it’s available, you’ll need to have a proper medical assessment to see if it’s right for you.
Wegovy belongs to a group of medicines called GLP-1 receptor agonists. These were originally developed to help people with type 2 diabetes, but a powerful side effect was discovered—they also support weight loss.
It works in two main ways:
It slows down gastric emptying, making you feel fuller for longer.
It helps reduce food cravings, which can make it easier to manage portions and food choices.
In large studies, particularly with people weighing over 100 kg, one in three patients experienced more than 20% weight loss. That’s a result comparable to bariatric (weight loss) surgery—often known as “stomach stapling.”
For many people, this level of weight loss can significantly improve quality of life and reduce the risk of other health conditions.
It’s really important to remember that in the clinical trials, Wegovy was used alongside lifestyle changes and education.
People who had the most success were also improving their diet, increasing their physical activity, and learning how to better manage their eating habits.
There’s no such thing as a magic pill. Medicines like Wegovy can make the journey easier, but lasting change comes from combining the medication with healthy lifestyle habits.
Like all medicines, Wegovy comes with potential side effects. The most common are:
Nausea
Vomiting
Diarrhoea or constipation
Headache
Tiredness
These are usually mild and tend to settle over time as your body adjusts. To help manage side effects:
Start on a low dose and gradually increase (this is usually how the doctor will prescribe it).
Eat smaller meals to avoid overloading the stomach.
Stay hydrated and rest if you feel a bit off in the first few weeks.
If side effects don’t settle, or if you’re concerned, always check in with your pharmacist or doctor.
Wegovy is an exciting new option, but it’s not for everyone - and it’s not the whole solution. It’s most effective when combined with support, healthy habits, and regular follow-up.
