The world is nuts. Be HYPERLOCAL this year.

Saturday, 15 February 2025

We’re only a few weeks into 2025, but it already feels like we’ve lived through a year’s worth of chaos. Internationally, Trump is like lighter fluid thrown onto the still-smouldering embers of 2024—seriously, a tariff war with.. Canada? Nationally, the tail is wagging the dog more than ever, with politicians behaving so appallingly that even the Mexican Ambassador had to step in. And locally? Well, at least we’ve got confirmation of the new hospital build… though details remain as thin as ever.

It’s overwhelming. It may feel a little out of control, and in times like this, its so important to look after ourselves - we need to hit pause, take a breath, and focus on what we can control.

One thing you can control? Who you support and where you spend your money.

This year, I’m doubling down on supporting local businesses more than ever before. Not just because it feels good, but because it genuinely makes a difference.

Full disclosure—I’m a total Americano-phile. Growing up in Dunedin in the late ’80s and ’90s, America was the cultural epicentre of the universe: Michael Jordan, Michael Jackson, McDonald’s landing on George Street—it all felt larger than life. Fast forward to 2025, and… OMG, what even is happening? How can we keep supporting this chaos? Well, I’m not going to. I’ve decided to consciously shift my spending away from large corporations tied to that mess and instead invest in businesses that build up my own community.

Supporting local businesses isn’t just a feel-good slogan—it’s a powerful choice. Here are three reasons why you should join me:

1. Stronger Communities, Stronger Connections

When you support local businesses, you’re not just buying products—you’re investing in your neighbours. Local businesses create jobs, sponsor local events, and keep our communities vibrant and connected. Every dollar spent locally helps build a stronger, more resilient Dunedin. Look at  just where our little Pharmacy sponsors - the local schools and Kindys, the local bowling clubs, the mighty Kaikorai “Demons” Rugby Club - this support helps build our community and makes sure our community thrives.

2. Keep the Character Alive

Local businesses give our city its unique flavour. They’re the quirky cafes, the one-of-a-kind boutiques, the family-run stores with stories behind every product. Without them, every main street starts to look the same—generic, bland, and soulless. Supporting local keeps Dunedin’s charm alive.

3. Local Businesses Are More Accountable

When you support local, you’re dealing with real people, connected and invested to our region. If something goes wrong, you can walk right through our door and talk to me -  the owner. Local businesses rely on reputation and relationships, which means they’re often more committed to providing quality service and products because you matter to them.

So this year, when the world feels nuts (because, let’s be honest, it is), choose to be hyperlocal. Support the businesses that support us.
