The Arexvy Vaccine for RSV (respiratory syncytial virus)
What is RSV?
RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) is a contagious respiratory virus that spreads easily through coughs and sneezes, through direct contact with someone who is sick, or by touching your face after touching a surface carrying the virus. For most people it causes mild symptoms that clear up within one to two weeks.
For some people, particularly older adults and those with underlying health conditions, RSV can lead to infections of the lungs and lower airways. Symptoms can include a cough, shortness of breath and wheezing, and it can lead to pneumonia, flare-ups of conditions like COPD and asthma, and hospital stays. In New Zealand, RSV cases typically start rising in autumn and peak in winter.
Who is eligible for an Arexvy vaccination?
Arexvy is a single-dose vaccine. Our vaccinating pharmacists can give it to:
Adults aged 60 years and over
Adults aged 50 to 59 years who are at increased risk of severe RSV, such as people with asthma, diabetes, COPD or chronic heart failure
Not sure if you qualify? Just ask us.
Arexvy is not funded. The cost is $399 per dose.
Arexvy is ordered in especially for you. Because it can't be returned once it's ordered, we kindly ask for payment before we place your order. We'll contact you as soon as it arrives so we can book your vaccination (often overnight).
What do I need to know about the vaccine?
Arexvy is given as one single dose.
RSV is typically most prevalent in winter, talk to us about the best time to be vaccinated.
Arexvy can be given at the same time as another vaccine, using a different injection site.
Arexvy isn't suitable if you're allergic to the vaccine or any of its ingredients.
In a clinical trial, a single dose of Arexvy showed 82.6% efficacy against RSV lower respiratory tract disease over one RSV season, and 62.9% over three full seasons, in adults aged 60 and over. Vaccination may not protect everyone who is vaccinated.
Vaccination works alongside everyday habits. Wash your hands for at least 20 seconds, cough or sneeze into a tissue, avoid contact with sick people, and stay home when you're unwell.
Are there any possible side effects?
