Eligibility and Cost
Every EPS visit is a consultation, not just a prescription. Our pharmacists will assess your child, explain what's going on and how to manage it at home, tell you what to watch for and when to seek further care, and supply funded treatment if and where it's appropriate.
How can we help:
Children under 14 years old
Consultation co-payment: $5 with a Community Services Card, $20 without
Funded treatment where clinically appropriate (prescriptions for children under 14 are free)
Dehydration
Watching your child deal with vomiting or diarrhoea can be worrying, especially when you're not sure if they're becoming dehydrated. Our pharmacists will check for signs of dehydration, show you how to give fluids safely at home, and advise on feeding and what to watch for while they recover.
This service is for mild dehydration. If your child is under 6 months old, can't keep fluids down, has reduced urine output, or there's blood in their vomit or stool, please see your GP rather than booking here.
How we can help:
Assessment of hydration and advice on managing vomiting and diarrhoea
Guidance on how to give fluids and when to seek further care
Rehydration solution or sachets where appropriate
Pain and Fever
A child in pain or running a fever needs relief fast, and it's not always obvious what's causing it or which option and dose is right. Our pharmacists will assess your child, work out the right dose for their weight, and explain how to keep them comfortable and when to seek further care.
If your child is under 3 months old with a fever, seems significantly unwell, is having trouble breathing, or has a fever with a rash, please see your GP rather than booking here.
How we can help:
Assessment of your child's symptoms
Advice on safe dosing and keeping your child comfortable
Pain and fever relief, with a measuring syringe, where appropriate
Bacterial Conjunctivitis
A red, sticky eye can make any child, and parent, miserable, but not every red eye is bacterial. Our pharmacists will assess what's causing it and advise on eye care and stopping it spreading. For children aged 2 to 13, we can supply the right eye drops or ointment on the spot if they're needed - see our Conjunctivitis page for treatment options outside this age range.
If your child has pain in the eye, is sensitive to light, has any change in their vision, or has significant swelling around the eye, please see your GP rather than booking here.
How we can help:
Assessment to tell bacterial, viral and allergic eye problems apart
Advice on eye care and preventing spread to the rest of the family
Antibiotic eye drops or ointment where the infection is bacterial
Head Lice
Head lice are common in kids, and they're no reflection on how clean your home is. Our pharmacists will confirm it's head lice, talk you through treating everyone affected at the same time, and explain how to check for and prevent them coming back.
How we can help:
Advice on confirming head lice and checking the whole household
A treatment plan for everyone affected, all under the one consultation
Funded treatment and a metal-tooth lice comb where appropriate
Prescriptions for children under 14 are free. A standard prescription charge may apply for other household members being treated.
Scabies
Scabies causes intense itching and spreads easily within a household, so treating everyone at the same time matters. Our pharmacists will assess the rash, explain exactly how to treat to whole household and household items (to prevent reinfection) and let you know that the itch can linger for weeks after treatment has worked.
How we can help:
Assessment and advice on how scabies spreads and how to avoid reinfection
Guidance on applying treatment and washing bedding and clothing
Funded treatment for everyone in the household affected, all under the one consultation.
Prescriptions for children under 14 are free. A standard prescription charge may apply for other household members being treated.
Skin Conditions
From mild dermatitis to minor bacterial or fungal skin infections, our pharmacists will assess what's going on, explain how to look after your child's skin and manage flare-ups, and supply the right treatment for minor, localised problems where it's needed.
If the affected area is spreading, significantly inflamed, broken or weeping, or your child seems unwell, please see your GP rather than booking here.
How we can help:
Assessment to identify mild dermatitis, or a minor bacterial or fungal skin infection
Advice on skin care, soothing irritated skin and avoiding triggers
Treatment where appropriate, such as a mild steroid cream and moisturisers, an antiseptic, or an antifungal cream
Oral Thrush
Oral thrush is common in babies and young children, and easily treated once you know that's what it is. Our pharmacists will check that's what it is, advise on feeding and hygiene, and explain what to watch for as it clears.
If your child is having trouble feeding, isn't taking enough fluid, has a fever, or the thrush keeps coming back, please see your GP rather than booking here.
How we can help:
Assessment to confirm it's oral thrush
Advice on feeding, hygiene and helping stop it coming back
Antifungal gel or drops where appropriate
